This includes the following types of interpretation: simultaneous interpreting, consecutive interpreting, liaison interpreting, whispered interpreting.
Simultaneous Interpreting
In simultaneous interpreting, the interpreter translates in ‘real time’, while the speaker is talking. This requires attentiveness and intense concentration, which is why at least two interpreters work as a team in a soundproof booth, taking turns at regular intervals and assisting each other. The event’s participants hear the translation individually via wireless receivers/ earphones.
Simultaneous Interpreting is suitable for multi-lingual events, conferences, seminars, negotiations, shows, galas and similar events.
Consecutive Interpreting
In consecutive interpreting, the interpreter does not begin until the speaker has finished (which may be an entire speech, but is more usually divided up into passages). The interpreter usually takes notes in the meantime, using a special system of notation. The number of interpreters needed depends on the difficulty and on the number of hours they are required for.
Because the interpreter comes after the speaker each time, around twice as much time needs to be planned overall, in comparison to simultaneous interpreting.
Liaison or Informal Interpreting
This is a form of consecutive interpreting adapted for conversational situations, including negotiations. The interpretor translates much shorter passages at frequent intervals, which allows the participants to maintain the flow of conversation.
This is generally used for round table negotiations, technical discussions, table talk and so on.
Whispered Interpreting (chuchotage)
Whispered interpreting is a special form of simultaneous interpreting, which is only suitable for certain situations. In such cases, the interpreter sits behind (or beside) the listener and ‘whispers’ the translation of what is being said. As with simultaneous interpreting, this requires at least two conference interpreters working as a team. For acoustic reasons (and in the interest of the other participants) each team serves one, or at most two, listeners.
In special cases, such as factory tours, or city walks, this kind of interpreting can be provided for small groups as well, with the help of portable wireless equipment (bidule). However, this is by no means an adequate substitute for a simultaneous interpreting system when it comes to events on a larger scale.
